The UP Center for Ethnomusicology was able to organize successfully LAÓN-LAÓN 2008 in Quezon City, Philippines and LAÓN-LAÓN 2009 in Pnomh Penh, Cambodia hosted by Pannasastra University of Cambodia. The principal aim of the Forum was to explore possibilities of establishing mechanisms and building capacity for exchange and collaboration on the scientific investigation, documentation and creative production of the musics of Asia. Both forum was conducted as a 3-day intensive dialogue with an involvement of an insider Convenor, Dr. Verne dela Pena, who is also from a dialogue member institution and a resource person, Dr. Dietrich Schueller of Austrian Academy of Science, who is not a dialogue member.
"...[The] ultimate goal [of Laón-Laón] is to establish a regional networking of music research centers that will be able to provide immediate access to materials and information on Asian musical traditions for scholars, creators, performers, and educators in the entire region. This forum is about sustaining what our forefathers started in terms of sharing, and helping one another to discover a common musical heritage and enriching our lives and the lives of future generations of musicians and artists in Asia."
